However, since this mask engenders itself in its very wearing, consciousness, by fixating itself on it, is to an even greater degree continually dwelling on it instead of freeing itself from it, i. e. from the outside. It continually sees itself as polluted, and, at the same time, the mask of its strivings, instead of being something essential, is the very outer side, and instead of being a universal, is the most enwrapping. What we see here is merely a personality limited to itself and its petty acts; we see a jesting personality beneath it, i. e. this very mask, as well looking for the lost outside as it is amusing itself on the loss inside, even more in front of than just in the mirror.
